The input part of SHS1000 series oscilloscope adopts the patent technology of broadband isolation. The two input terminals of the standard dual-channel input oscilloscope are common ground, while the two input terminals of the SHS1000 series oscilloscope are completely isolated, which means that the two input terminals can be safely connected at the same time. Voltage, the isolation safety level between the input terminals is up to CAT II 1000V, CAT III 600V. CAT is the safety level of measuring instruments defined by IEC. It not only stipulates the maximum rated voltage of measuring instruments, but also stipulates the environment in which the instruments are used, that is, overvoltage classification-CAT III is more stringent than CAT II. The floating voltage of each input terminal of the SHS1000 series oscilloscope, that is, the maximum voltage between the terminal and ground, is up to CAT II 1000V and CAT III 600V, which can meet most of the floating measurement environment.
Traditional oscilloscopes are limited to ground-referenced measurement because the ground wire of most oscilloscopes (the ground wire of the probe or the shell of the BNC) is connected to the protective ground. If the ground wire connected to the oscilloscope shell is connected to the ground through the ground wire in the AC power cord, this means that all measurements must be made relative to ground, which limits the typical oscilloscope between two points where the measurement is not grounded. When the voltage is applied, this kind of measurement is usually also called "floating" measurement. Since the voltage between the common-mode voltage of the signal line and the ground may be as high as hundreds of volts, or even thousands of volts, this measurement is used in switching power supplies, It must be faced in power electronic circuits such as motor drives and rectifiers.
Some engineers use a ground wire that disconnects the power cord or an isolation transformer to “float” the oscilloscope. The ground wire of the probe is connected to one of the test points for measurement. The common-mode voltage at this test point may be as high as hundreds of volts. At this time, the high voltage of the oscilloscope's case will pose a threat to the user, the unit under test and the instrument. In addition, it violates industrial health and safety regulations. In addition, when AC-powered instruments float on the ground, a large parasitic capacitance will appear. The floating measurement will oscillate, and the obtained measurement results will be poor. For such floating measurements, professional oscilloscope manufacturers are strictly prohibited. For some general-purpose oscilloscopes powered by batteries, such as the TDS3000B, floating measurements can be made, but the maximum safe floating measurement is 30VRMS.
In addition, for this kind of floating measurement, users can also choose to use isolated differential probes to solve. This is a safe and reliable way to allow grounded oscilloscopes to perform floating measurements, but it proposes new methods for the cost and complexity of measurement equipment. Requirements, independent power supply may be required, and its gain and deviation characteristics will be brought into each measurement. Oscilloscopes equipped with differential probes focus on performance and safety (bandwidth, isolation), while sacrificing portability and cost.
